  • Research summary

Poorly functioning leg veins can cause a variety of problems that together are called venous disease (VD). Patients can have leg pain, varicose veins and breakdown of the skin causing wounds called venous leg ulcers. Some people only develop varicose veins, but others can develop skin damage or leg ulcers over time. It is not clear why this happens to some and not others.
Research has found small chemicals in the skin (called metabolites) that can give us information about how VD progresses and develops. This study will use a method called Laser-assisted Rapid Evaporative Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (LA-REIMS) to look at these chemicals. We will use this to look at differences between patients with more and less severe forms of VD. LA-REIMS has been used before in our centre to look at the skin of patients with leg ulcers. LA-REIMS was safe and found important differences between healthy and unhealthy skin.
The results from this study will give us more information about how VD forms and progresses. In future this may help us to develop new tests and personalised treatments for VD.
