Research summary
Epilepsy is the most common neurological condition across the world (NICE, 2012). Several reviews have also shown that epilepsy is also prevalent in people with learning disabilities (PWLD) (Kerr et al 2001, Martin and Brown 2009, Emerson and Baines 2010). A review carried out by Emerson and Baines (2010) on the health inequalities of PWLD in the UK shows that PWLD have prevalent epilepsy rate of twenty times that of the general population, with a common occurrence of multiple seizures and resistant to drug therapy.
In current multi-disciplinary LD practice, epilepsy management remains one of our core business.
The aim of this study is to measure the knowledge and attitude of healthcare professionals to epilepsy and to identify their learning needs in order to improve current practice.
This study will be carried out by combining the use of two already validated questionnaires (The epilepsy knowledge profile - General by Jarvie et al 1993 and
Knowledge and attitude about epilepsy questionaire by Aragon et al 2009).
A free-text area where professionals can suggest what options they think would be of benefit to them to improve their knowledge and attitude will also be added to the questionnaire.
Results will then be analysed using identified demographics and passed on to the Trust's Epilepsy steering group to improve current practice.REFERENCES:
