  • Data collection arrangements

KHP Cancer Biobank has received a NHS REC favorable opinion for the last 17 years to collect samples and data and release to investigators following internal review. Sample types collected include blood, tissue, aspirates, saliva, cheek scrapes, urine and faeces.

We wish to seek consent to collect material from patients who have or may have a cancer diagnosis as follows:
    1. Surplus tissue from patients who have been diagnosed with breast, bladder, colorectal, head & neck, ovarian, prostate, renal, testicular, thoracic and UGI cancer or precancerous lesions (including associated disease recurrence in other organs); lymphoma, MPN and myeloma. This is an enduring consent and includes access to surplus diagnostic materials held at other establishments.
    2. Blood samples from these patients before, during and after treatment with a 24 month 'active' written consent period during which verbal consent only would be required for subsequent blood draws.
    3. Core biopsies or aspirates taken specifically for research purposes but at the same time as a diagnostic procedure.
    4. Urine sample collected during and after treatment.
    5. Demographic, clinical and followup data.

We also wish to seek consent from a patients with benign bladder disorders and healthy volunteers (local staff and students only).

Samples will be collected fresh as quickly as possible following removal, processed and either frozen or fixed to maximise research use and retain sample viability.

Samples will be stored in 3 locations on the Guy's Hospital site to minimise impact if a catastrophic incident occur at one storage facility.

  • Research programme

Sample, sample derivatives and data will be made available to researchers from any health associated organisation with a study that provides further insight into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and precancerous diseases. Investigators may apply from academic or commercial establishments, which may be local, national or international. Biobank resources will only be released to investigators with a scientifically valid study; with proven funding to complete the study and who agree to share their subsequent findings with the research community.
