Research summary
This study is designed to look at how the body responds to a drink containing a newly developed energy source called a ketone ester. Ketones are naturally produced by the body during starvation and can be used to power the body instead of sugar or fats.
The study will involve two tests each looking at how quickly we are able to detect ketones in the blood following the ketone drink. The first test will give multiple ketone drinks with several hours gap in between each drink (1 visit). The second test will compare how quickly ketones appear in the blood when the drink is consumed after a meal, with their appearance when the drink is taken on an empty stomach (5 visits).
The amount of ketone in the blood will be measured by taking small blood samples at regular intervals. Urine will be collected to measure how much of the ketone is lost in this way. Participants will also be asked to regularly rate their feeling of fullness and if they are experiencing any side effects from the drink. Respiratory gases will be collected.
The data collected from each individual will be combined to illustrate the trends. An understanding of these trends will be used to guide future studies using the ketone drink.
Subjects will be invited to participate via advertisement placed by study team members in the following locations: Oxford Daily Info, College Noticeboards, Hospital notice boards, Departmental notice boards, Sports Club/Centre notice boards.
