  • Data collection arrangements

NHS organisations in the Kent, Medway and Sussex locality are working together to establish a Secure Data Environment (SDE) that will allow routinely collected clinical patient data, across its population of 3.8 million people, to be used for research without the need for the data to leave the NHS.
The SDE enables accredited researchers to access health and social care data safely and securely for the benefit of patients, citizens, and the broader system.
Each research programme will have its own separate 'workspace'. A data extract produced for a research programme, once checked and approved, will be made available only to the workspace of that programme.
Researchers’ analysis activity is monitored, and research datasets supplied cannot be removed from the workspace. All requests for exporting results of analysis will be checked and exported by the data management team on behalf of researchers. Any results will be subject to individual, manual inspection and a range of automatic checks to ensure that they do not contain any information - including any part of a data extract - whose export has not been approved.

  • Research programme

KMS SDE welcomes data access applications from accredited researcher and research organisations interested in health and social care. All requests will be subject to a data access approval process, which incorporates the perspectives of patients and the public. The SDE looks to support usage of data more effectively to gain insights into our populations and translate these insights into improved services and treatments, which benefit local people, enable the system to operate more effectively, and tackle health inequalities.
