Research summary
Modern treatments of cancer save many lives but are often associated with complications. Many of these complications are predictable and some are preventable.
In order to help patient and their carers to keep safe during the challenging times of cancer treatment we intend to develop and test a smart-phone application that encourages regular checks for important complications helping patients and their carers to take the right steps if these occur.
While important information for patients with cancer is often available online or in printed form it can be difficult to find the right information at the right time. In other areas of healthcare simple checklists help professionals to focus on what matters most, especially in time of stress. We would like to explore whether this experience can benefit patients and their carers.
Testing will include questionnaires about patients’ experience, the number of times that the app has been used and what other support patients have accessed by patients within 60 days of starting to use the application.
The team behind KeepYouSafe has got extensive experience in developing simple rules for safe care that have had national and international impact. The application will be available in English and Welsh. It will be developed and tested with patients.
