Research summary
The aim of the survey is to identify the prevalence of loneliness on people 65+ who live in Highland. The objectives are to identify associations between personal characteristics and levels of self reported loneliness. The sample group (approx. 3000 people) will be men and women, aged 65 and over, living in the NHS Highland Board area. The survey will be either posted out to participants, or partners will support participants to complete and return the survey using a freepost envelope. The survey consists of a validated six-item loneliness tool which will be used to measure loneliness. Three questions about the participant's sense of coherence and one question about their quality of life will also be asked to determine if there is an association between these things. We will also ask for personal details such as age, gender, disability, living arrangements, caring responsibilities for the same reason. The survey should take around 5 minutes to complete. The results will help identify if loneliness is prevalent in Highland. This information will help to identify need leading to actions which should be addressed by services. The results will be included in the Annual Public Health Report and actions will be put in place to address this issue by partners.
