Data collection arrangements
Potential participants will be approached and informed about the Biobank when they are attending their hospital appointment at one of our Tissue Collection Centres. Consent and collection of samples will be undertaken by experienced staff, who have undergone appropriate training for their roles. Participants will be given patient information sheets and asked if they are willing to donate various types of biobank samples (eg blood, saliva, joint fluid or urine) and/or any excess material that has been taken for routine testing.
If the donor agrees to donate, written consent will be taken and biobank samples will be collected by trained staff, sent to the biobank, processed and stored in the Department of Infectious Diseases, King's College London. Associated data will be stored on a database on a computer that is password protected, with restricted access to authorized staff only.Research programme
The KCL IDB currently supports research from a variety of research locally, nationally and internationally. These includes studies on HIV, COVID, bacterial infections, antibody and vaccination studies, research into the immune system of children, cardiovascular disease and the control of inflammation and immunity. The KCL IDB's principle focus is on diseases which cause significant problems within our local area of South East London (e.g. HIV, hepatitis B/C, bacteraemias, immunological disorders, cancer and inflammatory diseases). Biobanked samples can be provided to researchers in both university and industry settings, within the UK and overseas. These research projects will assist in the understanding of disease development, progression, antibody and drug responses, development of better diagnostic kits and identification of biomarkers for possible intervention. Sample access is made via an application to the KCL IDB Governance Committee.
