Research summary
Women who experienced high blood pressure during pregnancy (HDP) are at increased risk of high blood pressure in future. Regular brisk walking might reduce the long term risk of developing high blood pressure in these women. The Free Active10 app, developed by Public Health England, encourages 10 minutes brisk walking every day. The Active10 app has not been evaluated in a trial.
Aims:
To conduct feasibility study of giving postnatal women who had HDP a ‘just walk it’ leaflet encouraging use of the Active10 app to encourage brisk walking, followed by a telephone call after 2 weeks and 4 weeks to assess:
1. How many women downloaded the Active10 app
2. How many women used it to monitor their brisk walking
3. How many achieved 10 minutes brisk walking in a day as recorded on the appMethods:
We will recruit 20 women with HDP from hospital wards/clinics. Two months after delivery we will request that participants measure their BP, height, weight and waist circumference and administer a health questionnaire.A week later the women will be posted leaflet (attached) providing information on possible benefits of brisk walking after HDP and encouraging them to download and use the Active10 app to monitor brisk walking.
A researcher will telephone them after 2 weeks. If they have not downloaded or used the app he will encourage them to try it and arrange a further call after 2 weeks. If they have, he will ask them to share their brisk walking activity from the app by sending an anonymised screen shot. The assessments will be repeated at 5 months postnatal in patient’s GP surgery or a telephone interview will be conducted.
Outcomes:
1. How many women downloaded the Active10 app
2. How many women used it to monitor their brisk walking
3. How many achieved 10 minutes brisk walking in a dayREC name
