Research summary
Healthcare associated infections (HCAI) are infections resulting from medical care or treatment irrespective of where the treatment was performed. Some HCAI may also be caused by bacteria from other patients either by direct contact or spread via the hospital environment. Bacteria can develop mechanisms to survive exposure to antibiotics, antifungals and antiviral drugs (antimicrobial resistance or drug resistance). In order to determine what patients consider to be the important questions to answer in research in this area, a James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnerships (JLA PSP) has been set up with patients, carers and clinicians. Following initial work by the panel a questionnaire has been devised which now needs to be used with patients to gather views anonymously.
The study will involve UCLH acute wards for 3 months and any inpatient potentially is eligible. The survey questions have been determined by the James Lind panel of staff and patient representatives and have been used in earlier surveys. Approximately 80 responses are required. The results will be analysed and used to produce a research priority list for future grant applications open to any investigator.REC name
