  • Research summary

The cells that line our blood vessels (endothelial cells) have the ability to greatly influence circulation and organ health in a range of disease states. Changes in the physical presentation of these cells are clinically important, yet are rarely studied in humans who are affected by acute changes in syndromes like sepsis.

As part of routine care for some patients. thin plastic tubes (cannulas, catheters and lines) are inserted into arteries of veins over very thin metal guidewires. The guidewires are removed and then discarded after use. This study intends to obtain cells from the discarded guidewires and study them. We plan to look at changes in endothelial cell structure and function compared between a control group (elective surgery patients) and our test group (critically unwell patients).

Knowledge gained from these experiments will inform the design of follow up studies, including repeated sampling from individuals to observe how the endothelial cells change over the duration of an acute admission.
