Research summary
This project plans to use a pressure measuring device which is inserted into the vagina. The aim is to do this with women who have suffered a bad tear between their vagina and anus when giving birth and who report to the person reviewing them that they experience pain during sexual intercourse. It is hoped that we can find out whether these women can have the device inserted and hold it in long enough to complete a few exercises without finding it too painful or distressing.
If these women are able to manage this, then future research projects could use the same device to find out more about the pressure in the muscles around the damaged area. This could then give researchers a better understanding of how these muscles are involved in the pain the women feel during intercourse. If this was better understood, it could be useful in developing treatments and advice for these women.
To achieve this, the project hopes to approach 15 women with a history of birth related tears, 10 who experience painful intercourse and 5 who don’t, as a comparison. The exercises will be completed in clinic on the same day as their doctor or midwife appointment and shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes. They will then be asked for feedback about the experience by the researcher. The Public and Patient Involvement group felt that this would be preferred by the woman rather than filling out a questionnaire as it is more personal and the subject is sensitive.
When all the feedback from these appointments has been collected, it will be sorted into common themes. This is then expected to be written into a paper for publication in a medical journal and can be used to develop future research projects.REC name
