Research summary
Over the past five years there has been a big push towards early detection of dementia in the UK, with significant increases in the number of people going through the assessment process. There is very limited knowledge and research about the experiences of the group of patients who receive a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) rather than a diagnosis of a dementia. 6-8 patients from this group will be recruited through purposive sampling and interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule. Interviews will be audio recorded and transcribed. Transcripts will be analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This research will provide information about the experiences of a group of patients who are often overlooked by service providers, and should establish whether individuals understand the implications of their diagnosis.
