Research summary
The aim of this project is to establish whether there is an association between the inevitable increase in CRP in the post-operative patient (hip or knee arthroplasty) and total Vitamin D level i.e.. how is Vitamin D affected? And furthermore, if there is an effect, how this might be managed in the district general hospital setting.
Vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3) plays a vital role in the post-operative healing process by promoting wound healing and tissue repair. Patients requiring hip or knee replacement have been chosen as their hospital stay is usually between 3 and 5 days and from the literature review I have carried out, any relationship between these two substances would be noticeable on the second post-operative day. The study will involve two extra blood samples being taken from the patient, one at their pre-operative appointment along with routine bloods being taken, and the second sample being taken 48 hours post-operatively by the phlebotomist taking the routine ward round bloods. From performing this research it may be of use in the future to the patient care pathway although the exact details would not be known at this stage.REC name
