Research summary
The UK population is living and working longer (Black and Frost, 2011) and in recent years there has been a decrease in the average age of patients who undergo hip and knee joint replacements (The National Joint Registry Editorial Board, 2015). This combination means more patients undergoing this type of surgery will be required to return to work. The aim of this study is to investigate if the patients’ level of physical activity prior to their operation is a factor in the time it takes to return to work. This syudy will be conducted at one site ,GJNH.There are multiple variables identified in the evidence that affect return to work including; physical demands of the type of employment, and pre operative sick leave (Kuijer et al, 2016; Styron et al 2011; Clyde et al, 2013). Patients between the age of 18 and 69 years old inclusive who have undergone a single primary hip or knee replacement for osteoarthritis will be included. During the patent’s admission, they will be asked to complete the data collection tool for physical activity level .(IPAQ Group, 2005) and a second short questionnaire regarding type of employment, number of hours worked per week and sickness status. The researcher will be required to complete a data sheet for each participant from the medical notes, including; gender, age, body mass index and type of prosthesis. Patients will be followed up until they return to work or up to one year.
