Research summary
This study aims to establish whether there is a raised level of Procalcitonin in new cases of colorectal (large bowel) cancer.
Procalcitonin is a blood test which is a highly specific marker of bacterial infection and if it is found to be raised in patients with large bowel cancer this suggests there could be a role for antibiotic therapy as part of disease management.
Any adult patient at University Hospital Monklands with a new diagnosis of large bowel cancer will be invited to take part in the study, which will take place in full at University Hospital Monklands.
Potential participants will be highlighted when all new/suspected cases of cancer are discussed at the multi disciplinary team meeting. Potential participants who consent to take part will be included in the study until they are able to have blood samples taken, which should be within 62 days or less from initial presentation as per national target for starting treatment following first referral for suspicion of cancer.REC name
