Research summary
We previously carried out a study of patients with permanent pacemakers in Leeds between 2008 and 2012 that showed that 40% of patients with a pacemaker have heart muscle weakness. The degree of heart muscle weakness was related to the amounbt of pacing required and other features in patients' past history (for example heart attacks and diabetes). Several other cross-sectional studies have shown similar findings. We now want to know if the heart muscle weakness is progressive. In other words, has it got worse, and is it now visible (>5 years later) in those who did not have heart muscle weakness previously.
To do this we want to invite the surviving patients back for a second scan and a second blood test. The study will consist of a single visit for the cardiac ultrasound scan. At this visit we will ask them about changes to tablets in the last five years and any other illnesses that they have experienced. We will also ask them if we can keep an eye on what happens to them in the future remotely through our own and the NHS electronic data systems (e.g HSCIC).REC name
