  • Research summary

Haemodialysis (HD) is a vital therapy for patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). An important part of succesful HD is having access to the vascular system. Arteriovenous fistulas (surgically created connections between the artery and vein) are critical for the majority of patients. Fistulas cause a change in blood flow in the arm. Blood flow changes in the arm might affect the temperature of the hand following surgery and during HD.

The aims of the study are to assess changes in temperature to the hands following surgery and during haemodialysis sessions. To do this, we will take photographs of the palm of the hands using an infrared thermal camera before and after surgery as well as before, during and after haemodialysis sessions.
