  • Research summary

Indwelling pleural catheters (IPCs) are now considered a first line treatment for malignant pleural effusion associated with non expansile lung. The pleural service at Arrowe Park Hospital has offered this treatment since 2018.

The first aim of this study is to retrospectively review all patients whom had an IPC placed and assess their outcomes, namely; complication rate, length of hospital stay, quality of life. The second aim of the study is to develop a validated tool to determine prescence of non expansile lung prior to intervention.

The aim is to compare local to national outcomes, and to accurately inform local patient information.
