Research summary
This was a dual-purpose project to train a graduate student in research methods and to gain new knowledge to inform practice in dementia care. There was little evidence to inform practice regarding the involvement of people living with dementia in decisions that involved them. The study team aimed to explore the involvement of these people in major decisions such as moving into a care home. A qualitative approach would be used to gather detailed information from Care Managers and family members (healthy volunteers) who had experienced this transition. This would be achieved through a case study approach involving semi-structured interviews. A purposive sample up to 10 non vulnerable participants would be drawn from cases admitted to care homes within one Trust during a 3 month period. Interviews would be recorded, transcribed and analysed. Written informed consent would be obtained. A pilot study with 2 interviews would be conducted at the outset. Study findings would help to better understand the involvement of people in this key decision and should inform practice at this point of transition.
