Research summary
Ethnic minority groups are underserved in health research and often excluded from trials as they have language needs. While there is some guidance on how to include translation and interpretation in trials, we do not know how much they are being used, whether they work and what the patients’ experiences are. The INVITE study will involve researchers who deliver trials and provide translation and interpretation and collect data through both a survey and using qualitative methods. We will also interview patients who may be given translated information and interpretation support and ask them to describe their experiences and acceptability of using the services. Finally, we will pilot the tracking of those patients screened and approached from a ethnic minority group and work out the current value of translation and interpreting services by collecting resource and cost data in trials.
