  • Research summary

It is estimated that up to 10 % of pregnancies will develop a complication associated with high blood pressure (also known as pre-eclampsia and eclampsia) that can result in serious problems including death of the mother and baby. Many such women are not diagnosed until is too late to prevent and to prescribe appropriate management. Therefore, there is a need for better screening methods to identify women at risk. By assessing the vessels at the back of the eyes, we have already been able to assess risk for heart disease in apparently healthy individuals. Our method, in combination with specific blood tests, could identify women at risk of pre-eclampsia much earlier than the current methods. In this way, each pregnant woman would be able to be assessed based on her individual risk and given appropriate care as soon as it is needed, even from the first weeks of pregnancy.
