Research summary
There are 120 patients registered at the Addenbrooke's Hospital haemophilia and thrombophilia centre with a mild bleeding disorder of unknown cause. Some of these patients have an abnormal blood test called thrombin generation. In these cases we observe that the patients time to form a blood clot is slower and also the blood clot that forms is not as 'strong' as other patients clots. We hypothesise that these patients are over expressing a natural anticoagulant protein called tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), which usually prevents blood clots forming but if the level is too high then potentially could cause mild bleeding symptoms. Our aim is to measure our patients TFPI levels and sequence the TFPI gene of these patients and compare the TFPI levels to normal controls.
