Research summary
The meninges are a term used to describe the protective layers of the central nervous system. The skull overlies the meninges to provide further physical protection. Recent work showed the skull, spine, and meninges play a role in regulating the immunity of the brain and spinal cord, in healthy and diseases states. However, little is known about the state of this immunity across the various neurological conditions, and the regulatory relationship between bone, meninges, and central nervous system pathologies. Understanding of this is important as it may lead to development of therapeutic avenues to treat neurological diseases. Patients admitted to Salford Royal Hospital, to undergo a neurosurgical operation, will be screened for inclusion. We will aim to recruit 84 patients over 5 years. Bone and meningeal tissue will be collected for processing using techniques such as immunofluorescence antibody labelling and imaging mass cytometry. If the neurosurgical operation involves resection of a meningeal, brain or spinal cord pathology, then part of the tissue resected will also be collected and processed in a similar manner to bone and meningeal tissue.
