Research summary
This study aims to determine if patients can be pre-disposed to developing dentine hypersensitivity, or if it is always a product of tooth wear. This will be studied by examining the junction between the enamel and cementum of human teeth which have not yet erupted into the mouth. Dentine hypersensitivity has been shown to affect up to 74% of studied populations. By determining if dentine is naturally exposed, i.e. the cementum and enamel do not form a continuous layer at the cementoenamel junction, a better understanding of preventative measures, as well as treatments, can be gained.
Potential participants will be between 11 and 80 years of age, and having an unerupted tooth removed as part of a routine dental appointment. The involvement of the participants will only last the length of the appointment. The removed teeth will then be placed in a common collection vial, thereby anonymising them at the point of extraction.
The removed teeth will then be sterilised, before being analysed using a variety of generic in vitro laboratory techniques including microscopy and spectroscopy.
