Research summary
Kidney failure and heart malfunction have been major issues globally. The need to diagnose kidney diseases at an early stage among heart failure patients is crucial for prognosis and future treatment. Cystatin C as a biomarker released from the kidney has a promising value in disease diagnostics and monitoring. This study is using lateral flow as a point-of-care (POC) approach to address kidney function diagnostics. POC is an approach demanding less turnaround time whilst providing qualitative or quantitative results. Since currently there is little POC for kidney disease monitoring at home so that venous samples are needed from patients for the hospital testing, thus increasing the waiting time for test results. Unlike the traditional and convention laboratory testing system, POC is user friendly and reduces hospital visit frequencies and encourages home-usage. My work in this study would be using samples containing novel biomarker Cystatin C from Southern Trust to test out the specificity and sensitivity of the built lateral flow system. The design of the lateral flow POC and improvements of consistency and specificity of Cystatin C detection are the aims of this study.
