Research summary
On average patients will live 5 to 6 years after lung transplantation partly due to the high incidence of chronic rejection. Since the first lung transplant was performed 30 years ago this survival has not really changed. Therefore research is badly needed into both what happens to patients after lung transplantation and into the underlying diseases treated by transplantation.
This study aims to address both these points through extraction of key lung cells so that they can be studied in their unstimulated and stimulated forms. Key hypothesis will then also be tested in laboratory models of the lung permitting cellular interactions to be studied. This should provide a better model of what happens in real life.
