Research summary
A small scale investigation into the views of Children and Young People (CYP) with co-morbid Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SNCN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs (SEMH) who have been excluded from mainstream school (and are attending a local Pupil Referral Unit (PRU)) or are at risk of exclusion in Mainstream Schools (MS), regarding what helps, or hinders them in accessing formal education.
The students will attend a single interview session, conducted in a manner suitable for their learning needs. Views regarding their learning environment, peers and adult interaction will be sought. Given the vulnerable nature of this client group, full consent will be gained from both parents and the CYP themselves. Consent forms for the CYP will be supported by visual cues to aid their understanding. Confidential details regarding the CYP and their families will be kept confidential at all times. Feedback sessions will be offered to parents following the interviews. Any disclosures which may indicate child protection concerns will be responded to in line with the guidelines provided by the Researchers employers.
The data is being collected to help inform service development regarding appropriate and effective support for this vulnerable client group and will be considered alongside relevant current research. It follows on from a similar local investigation carried out with CYP known to the Youth Offending Service. Little research has currently been carried out with CYP in MS and, as such, this project aims to help ensure the views of these CYP are considered. The views of CYP who have already been excluded as they are more able to reflect on what may have prevented exclusion from a more objective viewpoint.
It will be funded from the teams budget and participants will be selected from relevant caseloads.REC name
