Research summary
This study will provide detailed understanding of the role of bioactive lipids in psoriasis. Lipids and cytokines are skin mediators responsible for the initiation and regulation of immune response. However, lipid mediators such as the eicosanoids, endocannabinoids and ceramides can also contribute to skin pathologies in an event of inadequate or mounted against non-infectious agent immune responses Detailed analysis of skin and blood lipids will be performed using a lipidomic platform that is based on mass spectrometry. This will include assays using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and mass spectrometry-based lipid imaging. The proposed analytical approach will provide detailed information about the lipid species present in both healthy and affected skin, in both young and aged individuals, and will reveal the lipids that are specifically involved in psoriasis. Better understanding of the exact type of lipids involved in psoriasis will provide vital information for the development of new therapeutics and will support new treatment courses for psoriasis.
