    It is becoming increasingly apparent that the microorganisms in the human gut are pivotal to many aspects of our health. Disturbance of the gut microbiota has been linked to a variety of diseases, including colon cancer, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and obesity. Consequently, gut microbiota has emerged as a potential target for the prevention or treatment of such diseases. Targeted manipulation of the gut microbiota can be achieved by dietary intervention, including using fermented foods, probiotics or prebiotics. The study intends to perform an extensive biogeographical analysis of digestive tract microbiome and of the metabolites within the intestinal space after the consumption of kefir from Metabolic Syndrome participants (MetS). This strategy is aiming at disentangling the metabolites coming from the kefir, those generated by the host and those by the gut microbiota because of the consumption of fermented food.
