  • Research summary

This project aims to study the feasibility of introducing an exercise program in a haemodialysis unit and find out if there are any benefits for the participants.
Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease who are treated by dialysis often experience a syndrome of frailty which causes reduced strength, muscle weakness, decreased physical function. These patients are also at a risk of protein energy wasting a form of malnutrition characterised by muscle wasting. Exercise programs on dialysis have shown to improve physical fitness, strength, exercise capacity in dialysis patients. Many patients sit in a specially designed chair when they have their dialysis treatment. By  attaching a pedal to the foot of the chair the patients are able to cycle whilst having their dialysis treatment.
We wish to determine whether introducing an exercise program for patients when they dialyse improves their physical function, muscle mass and nutritional status. This study will be conducted on patients undergoing haemodialysis at a Satellite haemodialysis unit for a period of four months. Participants will be asked to cycle during the first two hours of their dialysis session. They will start cycling for 15 minutes initially and this will be gradually increased to a maximum of 30 minutes duration. Participants will have their measurements taken at the beginning and after 4 months of the exercise program. Patients will have an assessment of their physical function, frailty, body composition and nutritional parameters such as albumin.
