  • Research summary

This will be a baseline and optional 12-week physical activity intervention study, in patients with clinically diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This project aims to explore whether the function and composition of the gut microbiome, IBS symptomology, and other physiological biomarkers vary across different IBS-subtypes (IBS-Constipation, IBS-Diarrhoea, IBS-Mixed) and healthy controls. Additionally, we will investigate whether a 12-week physical activity intervention could be an effective therapeutic management strategy for IBS patients, to reduce symptomology, and improve quality of life.

This study will explore whether physical activity relieves IBS symptoms (measured through various validated questionnaires) and physiological measures (blood, urine and faecal samples).
