Research summary
This study will investigate potential cellular, biochemical and molecular factors that lead to abnormal wound healing in human skin. It builds upon extensive laboratory and animal model studies. We will utilise samples (wound fluid, dressings, skin/wound swabs, surplus debrided and amputated tissues) that would otherwise be discarded. Samples will be collected from consenting patients undergoing standard treatments. These samples will be used to validate and investigate the role of biochemical pathways, cell and molecular mechanisms, and skin bacteria diversity in wound healing processes. These studies aims to ultimately identify potential new molecular and cellular targets to aid development of treatments for non healing wounds.
