  • Research summary

The research is looking at the rate of non-attendance to Haven and trying to ascertain why individuals do not attend Haven for their initial or follow up appointments with the service. Haven is a mental health crisis service based in Shipley, Bradford which is open 365 days a year 10am – 6pm. Haven is a partnership between; The Cellar Trust which is an established local mental health charity, the NHS Bradford District Foundation Care Trust (BDFCT) and the local authority (BMDC). Haven’s aim is to provide a more comfortable alternative to A&E for those who are in mental health crisis. Haven has been funded via NHS England for A&E diversion on the basis of 2 years non -recurrent funding, with a view to identifying savings in other acute services, which will allow it to become a sustainable service in the longer term.
The service opened on 1st August 2016 and was developed as a result of the Crisis Care Concordat following the work that was carried out to establish the First Response service and the Sanctuary. The First Response service offers support 24 hours a day, seven days a week to people of all ages living in Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale or Craven experiencing a mental health crisis. The Sanctuary is a night time crisis centre based at Mind in Bradford. Individuals can be referred to Haven by The First Response Service, Care Coordinators who work with BDCT and A&E.
Haven have identified a pattern that individuals do not always attend their initial follow up appointments with Haven and they are keen to find out why to enable service development and to provide a better service for their service users.
The researcher is going to analyse pre collected data from Haven to ascertain the exact figure of how many individuals have failed to attend their initial or follow up appointments.
Below is plan A and plan B. Plan B provides a backup plan if individuals do not respond or engage with plan A. The researcher has created a second option due to the individuals who she is wanting to interview being hard to engage which she recognises might present a barrier to them providing their views on why they did not attend and what can be put in place to encourage attendance in the future.
    Option A:
Haven will make telephone contact via text message and telephone call to individuals who did not attend either their initial or follow up appointment with Haven. The text or telephone call will be asking individuals if they consent to their contact details being shared with a research student to the University of York. Those who have consented will be then posted out or emailed (dependant on the individual’s preference) information and a consent sheet. The researcher will then contact the individual 2-5 days later to talk through the information sheet, provide them with the opportunity to ask questions and then go through the interview with them over the telephone. The interview will include structured and semi structured questions.
There are two interviews one designed for those that did not attend their initial appointment and a second for those who did not attend their follow up appointment. The interview for those who did not attend their initial appointment asks some closed questions about who referred them, why they didn’t attend and if anything could have been done differently which would have meant that they would have attended Haven. The interview for those who attended the initial appointment but not their follow up asks about their experience for the initial appointment, how long after the initial appointment was the follow up one arranged for and whether the experience of the initial appointment influenced their decision to not attend for the follow up appointment. Similar to the other interview it asks why they did not attend and what, if anything could have been done differently to encourage attendance. The interview also provides the option for the participants to participate in interview questions which will allow them an opportunity to expand further on the interview with a focus on what the service could have done differently.

    Option B:
When individuals attend Haven they will be provided with an information sheet and consent form. The information sheet will include my contact number which they can text or call to consent to taking part in the research.
