Research summary
Patients with severe stroke experience higher rates of death, disability and complications than patients with less severe stroke. Those surviving a severe stroke would typically be unable to walk and reliant on others for their activities of daily living. Stroke rehabilitation is an essential component of stroke unit care and together result in reduced rates of death and disability. However, it is not clear what rehabilitation treatments are used in the management of severe stroke and whether these rehabilitation treatments are effective. The primary aim of this research is to explore what physical rehabilitation treatments are used by physiotherapy and occupational therapy staff in the management of severe stroke and why these treatments are used. The research will be conducted in 3 different stroke services across London and these services will be recruited over a period of 18 months. Eligible participants will be physiotherapy and occupational therapy staff, their patients who have survived a severe stroke, as well as individuals involved in the therapy sessions of these patients, such as patient carers. The research will involve observation of therapy sessions and patient discussions as well as interviews of physiotherapy and occupational therapy staff working with patients with severe stroke. The research is being funded by The Dunhill Medical Trust and will last 2 years. The results of the research will guide health care professionals in deciding how to best care for patients with severe stroke as well as inform future clinical trials.
