Research summary
Existing literature has tended to focus mainly on attitudes towards clinical trials among cancer patients and the general public. Consequently, the proposed study seeks to use qualitative interviews to explore, for the first time in United Kingdom, the attitudes towards clinical trials among renal trials participants. The aim of this project is to study former and current renal clinical trial patients. A sample of no more than
8 patients will be obtained. The inclusion criteria are:
- the patient must be at least 18 years old and
- the patient should have been involved in a renal clinical trial within last 3 years,
- and/or is an on-going renal clinical trial participant. The exclusion criteria:
- age <18 years and
- inability to provide written informed consent
- individuals for whom English is a second language and who find it difficult to communicate clearly
in English. It is hoped the information participants give will help us to have a stronger understanding of what makes it more comfortable for someone to make decision to participate in a clinical trial. This study will follow a qualitative research approach utilising in depth semi-structured interviews as the data collection method. A topic guide with open and probing questions to encourage the participant to describe and reflect upon her/his experiences and views. The study will be conducted at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and will form the basis of Master’s in Research (Applied Health Studies) dissertation submission to De Montfort University.
