Research summary
Osteoarthritis is a chronic, age-associated disease which causes significant disability resulting in high socioeconomic impact. One of the main characteristics of the disease is the erosion of the cartilage tissue within the joints which leads to impaired joint function and severe pain. This study aims to determine molecular mechanisms which controls the function of the cells found in joint cartilage. The laboratory-baed, basic science study will use tissue removed during knee replacement operations, which is usually discarded as clinical waste. The tissue will be primarily used for isolation of cells for culture or for culture of tissue fragments. The response of the cell/tissue to a range of stimuli will be examined by measuring altered gene and protein function. The outcome of these studies will be increased understanding of the biology of cartilage with the promise of new or more refined targets for disease intervention.
