  • Research summary

    This is a secondary data analysis project involving the analysis of data collected from 16 NHS Trusts across the UK ranging 1990 to 2007. The pre-collected data has been anonymised at source for all data prior to being transferred to the researchers. This is the only existing nationally representative dataset for maternal obesity which includes gestational age at delivery and can be used to analyse trends in pre-term and post-date deliveries.

    The project aims to explore the associations between maternal BMI and pre-term and post-date delivery in a UK population. Additional subgroup analysis will explore the association with maternal ethnic group, BMI and gestational age at delivery. The following will be investigated statistically using the specified dataset;

    • investigate distributions of BMI and gestational age at delivery in the sample population and by ethnic group

    • investigate the association between BMI, including BMI subgroups, and gestational age at delivery

    • investigate the association between BMI, including BMI subgroups, and gestational age at delivery by ethnic group

    • investigate whether using the BMI criteria specific to Asian populations affects the risk of pre-term and post-term birth compared using the BMI criteria for the White population
