  • Research summary

This project aims to investigate whether children who stammer are at increased risk of experiencing anxiety and/or depression compared to children who do not stammer in the UK, and is divided into two parts.

    Study 1:
The first part of the project will involve an online questionnaire to gather information about experiences of anxiety, depression and bullying amongst children who stammer, between the ages of 8 and 13 years, across the UK. This will take place online and information will be gathered using an online questionnaire divided into two sections: (I) parents/guardian and (II) children. The questionnaire involves a mental health and bullying assessment, and will be hosted on Action for Stammering Children charity website, who jointly fund this PhD research with the ESRC.

    Study 2:
This part of the project will involve a more in-depth analysis of children who stammer by comparing responses between three groups:
    (i) Children who stammer
(ii) Children with language disorder (existing SCALES data)
(iii) Typically developing non-stammering children (existing SCALES data)

Data from groups (ii) and (iii) will be taken from longitudinal population study, The Surrey Communication and Language in Education Study (SCALES), at UCL. Ethical approval has already been granted for this data collection and approval is in place for sharing this data with other researchers. Outcomes for the mental health, language, and bullying assessments will be gathered from the SCALES dataset. In addition, pseudo-anonymised background information will be gathered to enable matching of participants across groups.
