  • Research summary

The Department of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is involved in the care of adult patients with allergy, immunodeficiency (primary and secondary) and complex autoimmunity (renal disease, vasculitis and connective tissue disease). The purpose of this study is to improve our understanding and help develop better tests than are currently available in routine clinical practice to improve the diagnosis of these conditions. Healthy Controls and adult patients managed jointly or independently by the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Service, will be invited to participate in the study either face-to face at the end of clinical consultation or by telephone. Between 10mls (2 tea spoons) to 100mls (20 tea spoons) of venous blood will be taken when the patient has routine bloods taken at routine clinic visits. The volume of blood will depend on the requirements of the laboratory investigation the blood will be used for and the participant’s weight. A maximum of 500mls (100 tea spoons) will be taken per annum, although it is anticipated to be approximately 100 mls (20 tea spoons). The duration of the study will be 10 years from approval date however it is anticipated that research and development will continue to underpin the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Service and as such, extensions may be made in due course.Identifiable information about the patient will be kept for 15 years after the study has finished.
