Research summary
Our study will investigate the existence of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) in a sample of children who have experienced early years trauma and adversity. The ICD-11 diagnostic manual proposes a new diagnosis of C-PTSD alongside an existing diagnosis of PTSD. Symptoms of PTSD are well-established. The new C-PTSD diagnosis aims to capture the additional difficulties individuals can present with alongside 'classic' PTSD. It is believed that individuals who experience specific types of trauma in childhood are more likely to develop Complex-PTSD. However, this is not well established and the C-PTSD diagnosis is relatively new and therefore under-researched. Our project will help to establish the validity of C-PTSD as a diagnosis by investigating whether children who experience significant trauma in early childhood do indeed meet the C-PTSD diagnostic criteria.
