Research summary
People living with HIV (PLWH) should have the opportunity to be involved in research. Difficulties in recruiting enough patients for research projects is a long-standing issue. At St Mary’s hospital, research nurses and doctors try to involve patients in their projects, but they often do not recruit the required number of people for projects. This questionnaire study will ask PLWH their thoughts about being involved in research, what can be done to encourage people to enrol in studies, and what stops people being involved in research projects.
Two questionnaires have been created to ask the opinions of people who are currently or have ever been involved in research, and people who have never been involved in research, who receive their care at St Mary’s hospital, London . 150 PLWH will complete these questionnaires (all over the age of 18 years). We will ask 100 people who have never been involved in research, and 50 people who have been involved in research to complete a questionnaire, and compare the opinions of these two groups.
The questionnaire will only take about 10 minutes to complete, and will be completely anonymous. It is expected that this project will be completed in under eight months (including 4 months for collecting the questionnaires, and 4 months to look at the results). It is hoped that this information will help nurses and doctors in the research team make changes to make encourage people to participate in research.
