Research summary
Hand injury is common and can significantly impact occupation, education, health, and psychological well-being. Hand injury has also been related to the development of anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms, however, the psychological factors which contribute to this have not been extensively researched. Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU), which is the difficulty enduring the experience of not knowing, has also been consistently associated with the onset of anxiety, depression and PTSD. The aim of this research is to examine if IU contributes to distress (i.e. anxiety, depression and PTSD) following a traumatic hand injury, and to establish how this compares to other known risk factors. Adults who have experienced hand-injury will be recruited through a plastics surgery service. They will be asked to complete a number of questionnaires which will examine IU and distress.
