  • Research summary

The current study seeks to investigate the acceptability and effectiveness of an internet-delivered CBT-based intervention for diabetes distress in patients with type 2 diabetes.A mixed-method approach will be used that captures both quantitative and qualitative data. The research will be conducted over two phases.

Phase 1-Acceptability: Eligible patients will be invited to use the intervention over a two week period. The program will be advertised to patients through Enfield Community Service and GP surgeries via leaflets distributed by staff members. After the 2 week period participants will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire to rate the acceptability of the intervention’s components. Following this, a sub-sample of participants will be invited to discuss their feedback on the intervention components in a focus group to inform future programme developments.

Phase 2 - Clinical Effectiveness: Eligible patients will be invited to use the supported intervention over an 8 week period. The program will be advertised to patients through Enfield Community Service and GP surgeries via leaflets distributed by staff members. Participants will sign the consent form and complete screening measures online before beginning the program. They will then be referred to a supporter from within Enfield Community Service. Participants’ post outcome measures will be gathered 8 weeks after their initial log in or activation of the program.

The findings will be used to understand the acceptability of an online intervention for diabetes distress and to improve the programme in accordance with user needs. The findings will inform the design of a future evaluation of the clinical feasibility and effectiveness of Space from Diabetes. They will further contribute to the growing evidence base for web-based interventions designed to improve symptoms of diabetes distress in people with type 2 diabetes.
