  • Research summary

A multi-centre observational registry for paediatric patients who have had either a percutaneous or surgical placement of a Potts shunt for palliation of severe pulmonary hypertension. The study will recruit from current Pulmonary Hypertension patients. Those who have already undergone the Potts procedure, retrospectively and patients identified who will be undergoing the procedure in the future. The primary aim of the study is to provide information regarding the use of a Potts Shunt procedure in treating children with severe pulmonary hypertension. We would also anticipate generating publications derived from the database. The Potts shunt has a distinct role in treating children with severe PH and the more we learn about its use the more children will benefit in the future. An international collation of data will allow further insight into its significance. Currently, this data is only being collated in the United States and this research project will expand the current database to include data worldwide creating a larger patient cohort. Routinely aquired data will be collected from patients' hospital records. Each patient will have a unique participant identifier upon enrolment and data from this point onwards will be on a pseudo-anonymised basis. A record of this unique identifier will be stored on a separate password-protected computerised document in order to maintain a link to the patient, should it be required in the future. Access to this document will be limited to relevant members of the research team in order to maintain confidentiality.
