Research summary
Anaemia (low blood count) and coagulopathy (tendency to bleed) are common in patients requiring intensive care. These conditions are often treated with transfusions of blood and other cells, such as platelets and plasma. These are collected from healthy blood donors. Although transfusions may be life-saving, they might not always work effectively and may also be associated with harm by causing damage to important organs such as the lungs.
We currently do not know enough about transfusion practices in intensive care units (ICUs) across the world. In order to address this, our study aims to collect data from approximately 10,000 patients requiring intensive care across the world. This research will help us to identify areas for improvement in transfusion practice and to generate ideas for future research studies.
In order to make this study efficient, we will collect data that are already collected as part of routine clinical care. This study is purely observational. That means that there will be no changes to patient care and no drugs or procedures will be required. ICUs in different regions of the world will be taking part in this study. Each ICU will choose a week to participate in. All newly admitted patients on the ICU in that specific week will be included in the study and followed up until discharge from ICU or 28 days (whichever comes first).
