    Summary of Research

The study will significantly contribute to the understanding of the genetic determinants of bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) and may inform the development of personalised approaches to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The project will do this by studying people affected by BD or MDD who are scheduled to receive ECT or have undergone a course of ECT in the past. We will collect data and a blood sample from each participant. DNA will be extracted from the blood samples and an aliquot of this will be sent to the Wellcome Trust Sanger Centre in Cambridge for genotyping, and the remaining DNA will be stored in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde bio-repository for future research (which will require additional ethics approval as appropriate).

    Summary of Results

This study had no results as recruiting people for the study was very difficult. The study had to be paused because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and even after it resumed, finding participants remained a challenge. In addition, all the main researchers involved—Prof Daniel Smith, Dr Daniel Martin, and Prof Julie Langan Martin—left NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde during this time
