  • Research summary

The purpose of the research is to learn more about the natural response of teeth to various “insults” including decay, abrasion and trauma. A sensitive microscopic CT scanner (X-ray microtomography; XMT) will be used to visualize and measure the amount of mineral in the tooth and show how new mineral is formed in response to these insults. Further microscopic and analytical methods will be used to study the nature of this mineral. It is hoped that by understanding the biological responses of the tooth, we will be better able to develop new treatments that work alongside these responses to give a better outcome.
We require the use of teeth that have been extracted in the course of dental treatment, along with a record of basic associated information (gender, age, ethnicity, any history of cardiac disease and the reason for extraction). This information will be associated with the extracted tooth, but there will be no way of identifying the patient personally; thus it will be anonymous. The data will be carefully stored in Queen Mary University Of London password encrypted PC located at the Dental Physical and Sciences unit, which will be operated by only the researcher. The teeth, which will be collected after extraction, will be carefully transferred in a container from The Royal London Dental Hospital to the Dental Physical Sciences Unit Laboratory Located at the Mile End Campus Of Queen Mary University of London, where the studies will be carried out.
The study will last for three years.
