  • Research summary

There is currently wide-ranging evidence that on average 30-50% of individuals with long-term medical conditions do not adhere to their treatment regime as prescribed. Medication non-adherence poses significant challenges for both the patient and the health care system. Research has shown that these are due to many different factors. Whereas previous research has tended to focus more on unintentional factors, for example, forgetting, there is less understanding of the intentional factors that affect medication non-adherence. Therefore the aim of this research study is to gain a better understanding of the intentional aspects of non adherence. The study will be based on a new questionnaire which has been designed to assess Intentional Non-adherence specifically. The results of this will be compared with data from established questionnaires, which assess patient beliefs and values. The study will be carried out in two out-patient clinics (oncology and hypertension) in order to gain a better understanding of Intentional Non-adherence in two contrasting patient groups.
