Research summary
Anorexia nervosa is difficult and costly to treat. Inpatient care costs between £400 and £1000 per day. In this project we will be establishing whether intensive community care reduces the need for inpatient care. In this stage of the project, the feasibility of a part of the study will be examined. A group of participants will be recruited to attend intensive day care for three months, followed by transition to outpatient care over the following three months. They will then be discharged to outpatients and either receive a straightforward problem based approach (SSCM-ED Specialist Supportive Clinical Management) or a psychoanalytically based approach (MBT-ED: Mentalization Based Therapy). The decision will be made by the clinical team together with the patient and carer as a normal part of clinical practice. There would be no randomisation. SSCM-ED is an individual therapy and MBT-ED has both individual and group elements. Outpatient therapy would go on for 18 months, providing a total of 2 years treatment. Participants will complete questionnaire at 3-6 month intervals during the study.
